Manuka honey MGO 261+ is unpasteurized honey from New Zealand with a laboratory-verified methylglyoxal (MGO) content. This substance gives Manuka honey its exceptional status, and the more of it the honey contains, the more valuable it is. A low HMF level (a key indicator of freshness, age, and careful handling of honey) also shows that the honey has not been exposed to high temperatures and has retained its unique character. It also meets the official definition of monofloral Manuka honey, which is overseen in New Zealand by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI).

Manuka Honey MGO 261+ – Raw Honey from New Zealand with Laboratory-Verified MGO Content

Manuka honey MGO 261+ comes from central New Zealand, and its value is determined by its methylglyoxal content.

The manuka shrub blooms for only a few weeks each year, and its nectar is the sole source of the substance from which methylglyoxal is formed in the honey. Manuka honey is classified and valued according to its methylglyoxal content. The higher the number, the more concentrated the honey.

This substance is characteristic of manuka honey and is associated with its unique properties. The number in the name indicates how many milligrams of MGO there are per kilogram of honey. Ours therefore contains at least 261 mg/kg. The jar contains 500 g, which will last approximately fifty days at one teaspoon per day.

How can you verify that it is genuine New Zealand mānuka honey?

New Zealand introduced a mandatory scientific definition of mānuka honey in 2018 because products that did not meet its criteria were appearing on global markets. This allows you to verify its origin in two ways.

Through the government’s MPI definition. Authenticity is assessed not by the producer, but by the government. New Zealand introduced its own scientific definition, and testing against it is required by law for exports. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) specifies five markers: four chemical markers and one pollen DNA marker. Every batch must be tested by a laboratory recognised by the ministry.

Our honey meets all five criteria, and compliance has been verified by an independent laboratory, specifically under Section 5.1 of the General Export Requirements for Bee Products.

The honey is processed and packaged by New Zealand Health Food Company of Christchurch under the Manuka South® brand, which holds New Zealand government FernMark licence No. 100264 as proof of origin. You can look up the licence number at newzealand.com. It is a wholly New Zealand-owned company that has specialised in mānuka and other high-quality honeys for more than thirty years. Its facility is licensed by MPI and operates under a risk management programme.

What makes our Manuka honey different?

1. Leptosperin as proof of authenticity. It is a substance found in mānuka nectar that cannot be added to honey because it is not commercially produced. MGO content alone does not prove authenticity, but leptosperin does. It is measured in every analysis alongside MGO, DHA, and HMF.

2. Monofloral, the highest MPI classification. The New Zealand definition distinguishes two classes, and monofloral honey must meet all five criteria at the higher threshold values. If it fails to meet even one, it falls into the lower class of multifloral honey.

3. RAW honey that is never heated on its way to the jar. It undergoes only centrifugation and filtration to remove the wax. Heat causes honey to lose its quality irreversibly.

4. HMF well below the European limit. This substance forms in honey when exposed to heat, making it the most reliable indicator for identifying raw honey. Regulations permit up to 40 mg/kg, and our honey is well below this limit.

5. At least 261 mg of MGO per kilogram. By comparison, ordinary blossom honey contains only a few milligrams per kilogram. Professor Thomas Henle’s team at the Dresden University of Technology measured a median of 3.1 mg/kg in more than eighty honeys from around the world.¹

6. Every batch is tested by an accredited laboratory. MGO, leptosperin, DHA and HMF levels are measured using uHPLC and LC-MS/MS methods.

7. FernMark Licence No. 100264, the New Zealand government’s mark of origin. You can look up the number yourself at newzealand.com.

8. There is only one ingredient in the jar. 100% New Zealand honey, nothing else.

How does GymBeam verify the quality of Manuka honey?

Manuka honey is regularly analyzed in an independent accredited laboratory using validated methods. Four indicators are checked, each providing different information:

MGO, or methylglyoxal, is used to grade Manuka honey

Leptosperin as an indicator of authenticity that cannot be added to honey

DHA, or dihydroxyacetone, a substance found in nectar from which MGO gradually forms

HMF as an indicator of heat treatment and age

In addition, glyphosate residues are checked in a separate analysis.

The laboratory determines the MGO, DHA and HMF content using the uHPLC method, and leptosperin using the even more sensitive LC-MS/MS method, which combines chromatography with mass spectrometry. These are therefore not preliminary rapid tests.

NPA, or non-peroxide activity, is a parameter that you will not find in ordinary honey. All honey has some activity due to hydrogen peroxide, which forms in it and then breaks down. Manuka honey also has activity that does not depend on peroxide at all, and this is what NPA measures. It is monitored in Manuka honey precisely because ordinary honeys do not have it, and alongside MGO, it is another parameter used to assess Manuka honey.

According to the analysis dated April 14, 2026, the batch contained 280 mg/kg of MGO, exceeding the declared value, 1,090 mg/kg of leptosperin, 671 mg/kg of DHA and only 9.4 mg/kg of HMF, against a European limit of 40 mg/kg. This corresponds to an NPA of 10.4.

The product complies with Council Directive 2001/110/EC relating to honey and European requirements for microbiology, pesticide residues, contaminants and heavy metals. It also has Halal certification.

How to Handle Manuka Honey to Preserve Its Quality

Premium honey deserves gentler handling than regular honey.

  • Only heat harms it. Heat causes HMF to form in honey—the very substance laboratories monitor as an indicator of heat treatment. When making tea, let it cool for a while before stirring in the honey.

  • Use a dry spoon.
Honey absorbs moisture from the air, so a wet spoon or a drop of water in the jar can affect its shelf life.

  • Keep it in the pantry, not the refrigerator. All it needs is a temperature below 20 °C, a dry environment, and a place out of direct sunlight.

  • If it crystallizes, there is no need to worry.
Crystallization is common in unpasteurized honey and does not affect its quality. Simply place the jar in lukewarm water, never hot water.
