Maltodextrin is an easily absorbed carbohydrate, which is mainly used by athletes as a fast and convenient source of energy. It is an oligosaccharide consisting of several molecules of glucose, i.e. simple sugar, which is the main source of energy for the human body. In the small intestine, it is broken down precisely into individual glucose molecules, which are then absorbed into the blood. It is produced by the enzymatic breakdown of starch from raw materials such as potatoes, corn, or grain.

It is absorbed very quickly, as indicated by its high glycaemic index (GI). Therefore, it is beneficial to consume it before exertion (approximately 30–45 minutes prior) and during prolonged endurance activity to ensure a continuous energy supply. It is also suitable for replenishing carbohydrates after training. Carbohydrates contribute to the restoration of normal muscle function (contraction) after high-intensity or prolonged physical performance, which leads to muscle fatigue and depletion of glycogen stores in skeletal muscles. This effect can be achieved with a total carbohydrate intake of 4 g per kg of body weight. For this reason, it is advisable to combine maltodextrin with an adequate daily carbohydrate intake. The specific dosage depends on your goals, preferences, and current diet composition.
