Maltodextrin is an easily absorbed carbohydrate, which is mainly used by athletes as a fast and convenient source of energy. It is an oligosaccharide consisting of several molecules of glucose, i.e. simple sugar, which is the main source of energy for the human body. In the small intestine, it is broken down precisely into individual glucose molecules, which are then absorbed into the blood. It is produced by the enzymatic breakdown of starch from raw materials such as potatoes, corn, or grain.


As indicated by its high glycemic index (GI), it is absorbed very quickly. While in a regular diet, foods with a low GI value that satiate us well are more advantageous, when replenishing carbohydrates in relation to sports, we need the fastest possible carbohydrate supply. After consuming maltodextrin, blood sugar levels rise rapidly, thus providing the immediate supply of energy required for peak performance. So it's perfect for fast glycogen replenishment after a workout or when you're looking for ways to optimally fuel your muscles with it before the next workout. However, you can also take it before exercise (about 30 - 45 minutes) or even during prolonged endurance activity. The specific intake depends on your goals, preferences and current diet composition.
