Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra) is one of the oldest and best-known plants in traditional herbalism. Its root is used; naturally sweet and distinctly aromatic, it has a flavor you may recognize from candy. Our extract offers this plant in a concentrated and precisely defined form.
Each capsule contains 420 mg of extract at a 5:1 ratio, produced from 2.1 g of dried root. The 5:1 ratio describes the concentration of the raw material. Standardization, however, determines how much of the active compound the extract actually contains.
The extract is therefore standardized to 20% glycyrrhizic acid, the main characteristic compound in licorice. In Europe, however, it is recommended that glycyrrhizic acid intake be limited to 100 mg per day, as prolonged higher intake may raise blood pressure.1,2 The amount in one capsule has been chosen to remain below the recommended limit of 100 mg of glycyrrhizic acid per day.1,2

Glycyrrhizic acid is one of the most extensively studied components of licorice. Its active form in the body blocks the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 2 (11β-HSD2), which normally converts active cortisol into inactive cortisone.3 This prolongs the time during which cortisol acts in the body.
This is also why glycyrrhizic acid intake is strictly regulated: prolonged high intake can lead to sodium retention, potassium loss, and increased blood pressure.1,2 The available studies were insufficient to establish a safe intake for all sensitive groups, and in highly sensitive individuals, effects may occur even at slightly less than 100 mg per day.2
Studies of both deglycyrrhizinated and standard licorice extracts have repeatedly documented their effects on the gastric mucosa through stimulation of mucus production (mucin) and local synthesis of prostaglandins, which affects blood flow to the mucosa.3 A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled phase III study involving 200 participants investigated a deglycyrrhizinated extract (GutGard®, standardized for glabridin and containing no more than 3% glycyrrhizin) in relation to symptoms of gastric discomfort. Compared with placebo, the researchers observed favorable changes in measures associated with feelings of heaviness and the backflow of stomach contents.4
Licorice also contains flavonoids and the isoflavonoid glabridin. Glabridin is the main isoflavonoid in the hydrophobic fraction of licorice. It plays a key role in the production of the pigment melanin and also has beneficial effects on the body.5 A review published in the Journal of Drugs in Dermatology concluded that, among the plant extracts studied for managing skin pigmentation, soy and licorice had the strongest clinical evidence.6
The product’s sole active ingredient. An extraction ratio of 5:1 means that 2,100 mg of dried Glycyrrhiza glabra root was processed to produce 420 mg of extract. The extract is standardized to 20% glycyrrhizic acid, equivalent to 84 mg per capsule.
