What makes zinc in chelated form different?

In chelated form, zinc is firmly bound to two molecules of the amino acid glycine. An independent clinical study compared how well bisglycinate is utilised by the body compared to gluconate, another commonly used form of zinc in dietary supplements. In this study, bisglycinate showed the best absorption.1 The chart also includes other common forms of zinc for illustrative comparison, showing the difference in their absorption.1

Why is zinc important for health?

Zinc is involved in hundreds of enzymatic and biological processes in the body. One of its key roles is supporting the immune system, which acts as our body's defence mechanism every day. Men will also appreciate that zinc contributes to maintaining normal blood testosterone levels, a hormone that affects not only muscle mass but also overall vitality. This essential mineral also contributes to fertility and normal reproductive function in both women and men.3

A double-blind randomised controlled study observed women who took zinc before the onset of menstruation. Compared to the group without supplementation, they reported milder menstrual symptoms.5

Zinc for the mind, beauty and cell protection

For people who spend a lot of time at the computer or study for exams, zinc can help thanks to its effect on cognitive functions, such as memory, attention or thinking speed. It also contributes to maintaining good vision, which will be appreciated by anyone who spends a lot of time in front of a screen. In addition, it helps maintain healthy hair and nails, which, like the skin, are made up of the protein keratin, whose production is influenced by zinc.3

Zinc also plays a role in protecting cells against oxidative stress.3 An interesting finding was provided by a meta-analysis of 25 clinical studies in adults, which confirmed that zinc supplementation statistically significantly reduces levels of the CRP and IL-6 markers as well as the oxidative stress marker MDA, while increasing the body's total antioxidant capacity (TAC).4

In addition, zinc contributes to the metabolism of macronutrients, namely carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and helps maintain normal acid-base balance in the body. It is also involved in the process of cell division, protein synthesis and normal DNA synthesis, the carrier of genetic information in every cell.3

How is GymBeam zinc different from standard products?

For dietary supplements, safety and transparency throughout the entire process, from raw material selection to the final tablet, play a key role. Here are 8 things that GymBeam does differently:

  1. Zinc comes in the form of zinc bisglycinate, where zinc is bound to the amino acid glycine in a 1:2 ratio (chelated bond).
  2. The supplied form contains 67–70 % zinc bisglycinate, of which 20 % is elemental zinc in dry matter. The remainder consists of free glycine, which is used in excess during production to bind all the zinc into a chelated bond.
  3. The manufacturing process does not use organic solvents, with water being the only solvent used, so the final raw material contains no solvent residues.
  4. Raw material production is covered by FSSC 22000 food safety certification based on HACCP principles. The raw material also carries Halal and Kosher certifications.
  5. We manufacture the capsules in-house at a facility certified to ISO 9001 and with a HACCP system.
  6. The final product undergoes independent laboratory testing for heavy metals (lead, cadmium, mercury), microbiological safety (yeasts, moulds, coliform bacteria, salmonella) and active ingredients. You can find all results directly on the product page.
  7. The product is GMO-free and allergen-free.
  8. The capsule is made from plant cellulose and is suitable for vegans.

Who is zinc suitable for?

  • People looking for an organic form of zinc with a higher absorption rate, demonstrated in clinical studies.
  • Athletes and physically active individuals who want to support immune system function as part of their training routine.
  • People with sensitive digestion, who will appreciate its gentleness on the stomach thanks to the chelated bond.
  • Students and people in managerial positions, who face demanding mental challenges and want to support memory, concentration and thinking speed.
  • Vegans and vegetarians, whose absorption of zinc from plant-based diets tends to be lower than from animal sources.
  • Women interested in supplementing zinc in the period before menstruation.
  • Men who want to support normal testosterone levels in the blood and fertility.
How is GymBeam zinc different from standard products?

When should you take zinc?

Take 1 capsule daily, with plenty of water. You can take the capsule on an empty stomach or with food. Bisglycinate is one of the organic forms of zinc that tends to be gentler on digestion thanks to its chelated structure. This makes zinc bisglycinate suitable even for people with more sensitive digestion.

Taking zinc together with other minerals and medications

At higher doses, zinc may compete with calcium and iron for absorption, as these minerals use similar transport pathways in the intestines. If you are taking separate calcium or iron supplements in higher doses, leave an interval of approximately two hours between them and zinc.

Zinc can also form complexes with tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, reducing their absorption.⁷ In this case, we recommend an interval of at least two hours before taking them, or four to six hours after taking them. If you take any regular medication, discuss zinc supplementation with your doctor or pharmacist beforehand.

Long-term zinc use

Zinc is a common part of the diet that the body needs long term for hundreds of biochemical processes, so there is no need to stop taking it or cycle it. We recommend taking it regularly and long term. However, always take it with regard to your body's current needs.

Composition and dosage

Composition

Bulking agent (microcrystalline cellulose), zinc bisglycinate, hypromellose capsule, anti-caking agent (magnesium salts of fatty acids).

Dosage

  • One zinc tablet provides 15 mg, i.e. 150 % of the Nutrient Reference Value (NRV).
  • According to the European standard (EFSA), the recommended daily zinc intake ranges between 7,5–12,7 mg for women and 9,4–16,3 mg for men.
  • The range depends on the amount of phytates in the usual diet, which reduce zinc absorption, so a higher intake is especially needed when following a diet rich in whole grains and legumes.
