However, few people realise <g id=\"gid_0\">how deeply it can affect our brain<\/g>. New scientific findings published in the prestigious journal <em>eBioMedicine<\/em> show that <strong>poor quality sleep can literally accelerate brain ageing. <\/strong>How is this possible?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Scientists_Measured_Sleep-Related_Brain_Age\"><\/span>How Scientists Measured Sleep-Related Brain Age<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Researchers examined more than <strong>27,000 adults<\/strong> from the UK Biobank database, with the average age of participants being approximately <strong>55 years<\/strong>. Participants were divided into three groups: <strong>healthy sleep (\u22654 points), moderate (2\u20133 points), and poor (\u22641 point)<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading is-style-h2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Did_the_Research_Find_and_Why_Does_it_Matter\"><\/span>What Did the Research Find and Why Does it Matter?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People with poor quality sleep (1 point or less), compared to the healthy sleep group (4 points or more), had an average of <strong>1 year biologically older brain<\/strong> than their actual age. So, why does it matter? Scientists further explain that sleep quality is important for the brain because:  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>poor sleep can accelerate brain ageing<\/strong>, which increases the risk of later cognitive decline and dementia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>chronic inflammation (low-grade inflammation)<\/strong> in the body has been identified as one of the possible mechanisms driving the brain ageing process. According to scientists, low-grade inflammation could account for about 10% of the differences in biological brain age.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>These findings align with previous research indicating that sleep is crucial for a wide range of biological functions, including <strong>metabolism regulation, immune function modulation, toxin removal from the brain, and memory consolidation.<\/strong> <sup><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\">[3\u20135]<\/mark><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1124\" height=\"749\" src=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/iStock-1326080733-1124x749.jpg\" alt=\"Do you have a sleep debt?
