This number tells you what the minimum amount of energy is that your body needs. However, one important question arises. Is it enough for you? Today we will answer this together and in doing so we will also reveal, for example, whether you can speed it up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_basal_metabolism\"><\/span>What is basal metabolism?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of you have heard of it, but not everyone knows what it&#8217;s all about. <strong>Basal metabolic<\/strong> <strong>rate<\/strong>, also known as <strong>BMR<\/strong>, can be thought of as the energy the body needs for its <strong>&#8220;maintenance mode&#8221;<\/strong>. Practically, it&#8217;s the amount of calories that are needed to<strong> survive,<\/strong> as it uses this energy for the function of its <strong>essential organs.<\/strong> The body burns so much energy just by<strong> basic vital functions<\/strong> such as breathing or pumping of the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be surprised how many calories you need just for your body to function properly. For the average person who is moderately active, BMR accounts for up to roughly <strong>50-65% of total daily energy expenditure.<\/strong> For example, with a caloric requirement of 2000 kcal, as much as 1300 kcal can easily represent basal metabolic rate. Therefore, remember that even if you are not currently exercising and having a lazy day, your body naturally demands energy and that&#8217;s okay.&nbsp;<sup><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">[5]<\/mark><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do you actually need to know the value of your BMR, you ask? What will you use this information for? Practically, in everyday life, it&#8217;s just an interesting fact that certainly won&#8217;t do you any harm to be aware of. However, it is of more use to you when you need to <strong>calculate your energy intake<\/strong>. Both figures speak to the amount of energy the body puts out when it is at rest. The difference, however, lies in what conditions are currently affecting the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Basal metabolism<\/strong> is the expenditure of energy at maximum rest. The condition is that when measuring it, a person must be lying down, must have been fasting for at least 10 hours, be awake for a while, and be in a dark, temperature-controlled room. The basal metabolic rate can practically only be obtained under controlled laboratory conditions.&nbsp;<sup><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">[5,6]<\/mark><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Resting metabolic rate<\/strong>, known by the acronym RMR, is simply the amount of energy burned during <strong>times of minimal activity<\/strong>. You can think of RMR as the energy you expend when you&#8217;re cooped up in your house all day, lying on the couch in front of the TV and occasionally walking into the other room. Then, for example, with a result of 1400 kcal, they try to eat exactly that amount of calories each day in the good faith that they are doing the best for themselves. However, you already know that this is not sufficient. A person with a BMR\/RMR of 1400 kcal would only need those calories if they were lounging around at home all day doing almost nothing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as soon as they get dressed and walk just a few minutes to the store, for example, their energy needs increase. Not to mention that eating and digesting food itself consumes calories. Its base is <strong>meat<\/strong> &#8211; in this case, <strong>basal (resting) metabolism<\/strong>. However, a complete hamburger also has vegetables, cheese, sauce and other ingredients in it. Similarly, the <strong>total energy intake<\/strong>. To be complete, it is not enough to include only the energy needed for basic life functions. It also includes calories burned in <strong>other activities<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does the total daily energy expenditure consist of?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Basal metabolic rate<\/strong> (BMR) is the amount of energy required to maintain the body&#8217;s basic functions. However, it is the amount of energy that the body would expend only under maximally controlled conditions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Resting Metabolic Rate<\/strong> (RMR) is actually the <strong>basal metabolic rate increased by 10%<\/strong> and is the energy your body uses at maximum rest under normal resting conditions at home. It normally accounts for roughly <strong>60 &#8211; 75%<\/strong> of the total calories burned per day.&nbsp;<sup><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">[1]<\/mark><\/sup><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>Thermic Effect of Food<\/strong> (TEF) are the calories your body uses to digest food. It typically represents about <strong>10% of the total energy expenditure<\/strong> of a normal mixed diet. For example, if you burn 2,000 kcal per day, about 200 kcal of that is used just to process the food you eat. As a point of interest, protein has the highest TEF of all macronutrients, at around 20-30%.&nbsp;<sup><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">[2]<\/mark><\/sup><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <strong>thermic effect of normal daily activities<\/strong> (NEAT &#8211; Non-exercise Activity Thermogenesis) is the energy expended during everyday activities. This includes <strong>walking to work, getting dressed, cleaning,<\/strong> etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exercise Activity Thermogenesis<\/strong> (EAT) is the calories burned during <strong>focused physical activity<\/strong>. This includes the energy expended during <strong>workouts<\/strong> and <strong>sports<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It is the last two components of energy expenditure &#8211; <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/what-is-the-most-important-factor-in-losing-weight\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\"><strong>NEAT&nbsp;<\/strong>and <strong>EAT<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp; &#8211; that can be <strong>influenced the most<\/strong>. Harris &#8211; Benedict equation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This equation is the most widely known and used, despite the fact that it was created more than 100 years ago, in 1918. It has since been modified once in 1984 and this version is still in use today.&nbsp;<sup><mark class=\"has-inline-color has-orange-color\" style=\"background-color: rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);\">[5]<\/mark><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Just like the other formulas, this one also takes <strong>gender<\/strong> into account and therefore the calculation is <strong>different for men and women. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Harris-Benedict equation for women:<\/strong> BMR = (9.247 x weight in kg) + (3.098 x height in cm) &#8211; (4.33 x age) + 447.593<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Harris-Benedict equation for men:<\/strong> BMR = (13.397 x weight in kg) + (4.799 x height in cm) &#8211; (5.677 x age) + 88.362<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we will practically show how this formula is used to calculate the basal metabolic rate of a 30-year-old woman with a height of 170 cm and a weight of 70 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BMR = (9.247 x <strong>70 kg<\/strong>) + (3.098 x <strong>170 cm<\/strong>) &#8211; (4.33 x <strong>30 years<\/strong>) + 447.593 = <strong>1491.643 kcal<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Harris-Benedict equation, this woman requires about 1,492 calories just to keep her body functional and healthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Mifflin-St. Jeore equation<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The Mifflin-St. George equation, although not as well known as the previous calculation, is now considered more <strong>accurate<\/strong>. Interestingly, it is also a revised Harris-Benedict equation.
