To je <strong>alkaloid<\/strong> koji je izvorno slu\u017eio kao <strong>obrambeni mehanizam<\/strong> biljke kave <strong>od \u0161teto\u010dina.<\/strong> Njezin u\u010dinak na insekte mo\u017ee biti smrtonosan. Za ljude postaje smrtonosan samo u dozama iznad 10 grama \u010distog kofeina. Kofein ima sposobnost vezanja na adenozinske receptore.
