Is it&nbsp;<strong>a revolutionary discovery or just another artificially-created hype?<\/strong>&nbsp;In this article, we will introduce you to the nature of liposomes, and how this form of preservation of the active substance differs from conventional forms. In addition, you will learn about the results of research and&nbsp;<strong>the view of scientists on the liposomal supplements.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Liposomes\"><\/span>Liposomes<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Liposomes<\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">are&nbsp;<strong>bilayer lipid-based vesicles<\/strong>&nbsp;that are able to&nbsp;<strong>encapsulate and transport small molecules with low solubility<\/strong>&nbsp;in the human body. In this way, it is possible to define&nbsp;<strong>a microscopic transporter<\/strong>&nbsp;into which you place a passenger, for example vitamin C, and thanks to the liposome, the passenger gets to the&nbsp;<strong>desired \u201cdestination station\u201d.<\/strong>&nbsp;But let\u2019s start nicely from the beginning.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[1]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">The vesicle<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">is something like a container that is made up of&nbsp;<strong>a lipid bilayer<\/strong>&nbsp;and is designed to&nbsp;<strong>separate the contents<\/strong>&nbsp;from the cytoplasm or extracellular environment based on fluid. There are&nbsp;<strong>different types of vesicles<\/strong>&nbsp;containing&nbsp;<strong>liquids<\/strong>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<strong>gases<\/strong>.&nbsp;<strong>Liposomes<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>a type of spherical vesicle<\/strong>&nbsp;that may have one or more&nbsp;<strong>phospholipid bilayers.<\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[2] [3]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">The very meaning of the word liposome is derived from the Greek terms&nbsp;<strong>\u201clipos\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>\u201csoma\u201d,<\/strong>&nbsp;which means&nbsp;<strong>\u201cfat\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>\u201cbody\u201d<\/strong>. To give you an idea, the liposome is a \u201cclosed ball.\u201d Its&nbsp;<strong>membrane is formed<\/strong>&nbsp;by the already mentioned&nbsp;<strong>lipid bilayer,<\/strong>&nbsp;which is composed of two layers of closely arranged phospholipids. They have two parts \u2013 the head and the tail, which are quite different from each other. While the&nbsp;<strong>heads are hydrophilic \u2013 the tails<\/strong>&nbsp;are&nbsp;<strong>lipophilic<\/strong>. So the heads&nbsp;<strong>\u201clove water\u201d<\/strong>&nbsp;and the tails&nbsp;<strong>\u201cadore fat\u201d.<\/strong>&nbsp;The lipid bilayer is formed by joining two separate membranes by&nbsp;<strong>\u201cpulling\u201d the tails together.<\/strong>&nbsp;The hydrophilic heads are turned away from each other and attracted by the surrounding water, creating a membrane.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[4] [5]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Liposomal products have been a hit in recent years, but the liposomes themselves are a little older. They were first described by&nbsp;<strong>Alex Bangham in 1961,<\/strong>&nbsp;and since then scientists have been researching their use. Today, their application is introduced in the field of&nbsp;<strong>gene distribution, biomolecules<\/strong>&nbsp;and probably the best known \u2013&nbsp;<strong>drug distribution.<\/strong>&nbsp;Their importance is also confirmed by the fact that this is&nbsp;<strong>the first nano drug delivery system<\/strong>&nbsp;that has been&nbsp;<strong>successfully utilized&nbsp;<\/strong>into clinical use. Nano technologies are in themselves a very interesting topic, so it is not uncommon for this transmission system to be interesting in several areas. The aim of the article is to introduce this form and point out its advantages and disadvantages in comparison with the classical form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of liposomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">An important attribute of liposomes is their&nbsp;<strong>size<\/strong>, which can vary. They may have&nbsp;<strong>one or more bilayer membranes,<\/strong>&nbsp;and their vesicles may be&nbsp;<strong>0.025 \u03bcm (small)<\/strong>&nbsp;to&nbsp;<strong>2.5 \u03bcm (large).<\/strong>&nbsp;Liposomes are divided into&nbsp;<strong>3 types,<\/strong>&nbsp;which are used for other drugs and target cells<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[3] [7]<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Multilamellar vesicles<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong>(MLV)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Small unilamellar vesicles<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong>(SUV)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Large unilamellar vesicles<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong>(LUV)<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Unilamellar vesicles<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;<span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">have&nbsp;<strong>1 phospholipid bilayer<\/strong>&nbsp;that coats the aqueous solution. This is due, for example, to a wide range of products of&nbsp;<strong>different quality.<\/strong>&nbsp;For a better overview, we present their strengths and weaknesses<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[9] [10]<\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Benefits of liposomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">practical<\/span>&nbsp;<\/strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">for the consumer<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">beneficial for people with&nbsp;<strong>trouble swallowing a tablet<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the same effect at a lower dose<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">have&nbsp;<strong>higher bioavailability<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">higher oral absorption and&nbsp;<strong>lymphatic absorption<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">higher cell delivery<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">ability to transport both&nbsp;<strong>hydrophobic and hydrophilic components<\/strong><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.sk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/headache-1540220_1920-1124x749.jpg\" alt=\"liposomal vitamins and minerals - benefits\" class=\"wp-image-170193\" style=\"width:843px;height:562px\" width=\"843\" height=\"562\" title=\"advantages and disadvantages of the liposomal form\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/headache-1540220_1920-1124x749.jpg 1124w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/headache-1540220_1920-400x267.jpg 400w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/headache-1540220_1920-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/headache-1540220_1920.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Disadvantages of liposomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>higher costs<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>production problems, such as high particle size<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>instability of some products<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Liposomal_supplements\"><\/span>Liposomal supplements<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The liposomal form of drugs finds its application in various branches of pharmacology and medicine, while nutritional supplements are one of these areas. There is a wide range of vitamins and other nutrients on the market in liposomal form. But are <a aria-label=\"liposomal supplements (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/liposomal-multivitamin-gymbeam.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\"><strong>liposomal supplements<\/strong><\/a> better? The best source of relevant information is research, so we have prepared the results of several studies that have tested the functionality of liposomal forms of supplements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">One of the nutrients studied was, for example,&nbsp;<strong>vitamin B12,<\/strong>&nbsp;the deficiency of which is a common problem for people, regardless of age. The classic way to&nbsp;<strong>treat<\/strong>&nbsp;vitamin B12&nbsp;<strong>deficiency<\/strong>&nbsp;is by&nbsp;<strong>intramuscular injection,<\/strong>&nbsp;so researchers have studied the change in vitamin levels with&nbsp;<strong>liposomal supplementation.<\/strong>&nbsp;The study involved&nbsp;<strong>53 people of both sexes,<\/strong>&nbsp;and the study lasted approximately 7 months. The participants were&nbsp;<strong>\u201cnon-vegetarians\u201d over the age of 50<\/strong>&nbsp;and were given vitamin B12 sublingually&nbsp;<strong>3 times a day,<\/strong>&nbsp;with a daily dose of&nbsp;<strong>1000 \u03bcg of methylcobalamin.<\/strong>&nbsp;According to the results,&nbsp;<strong>after the first week,<\/strong>&nbsp;B12 levels increased on average&nbsp;<strong>by 54.68%,<\/strong>&nbsp;after a month&nbsp;<strong>by 105.51%,<\/strong>&nbsp;and after 2 months by up to&nbsp;<strong>270%.<\/strong>&nbsp;Thus, supplementation of the liposomal form of B12 clearly makes sense. It is a pity that this research did not include a comparison with the common \u201cnon-liposomal\u201d form, as they themselves state, it would be interesting to verify whether the&nbsp;<strong>liposomal form is better than the conventional one.<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\">[12]<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.sk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ON3A9732-mensi-min-min-1124x749.png\" alt=\"liposomal supplements and research\" class=\"wp-image-170245\" style=\"width:843px;height:562px\" width=\"843\" height=\"562\" title=\"liposomal supplements and research\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ON3A9732-mensi-min-min-1124x749.png 1124w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ON3A9732-mensi-min-min-400x267.png 400w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ON3A9732-mensi-min-min-1536x1024.png 1536w, https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/ON3A9732-mensi-min-min.png 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 843px) 100vw, 843px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">In addition to vitamins, other nutrients, such as the mineral <strong><a aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/magnesium\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">magnesium<\/a><\/strong>, are found in <strong>liposomal form.<\/strong> A 2018 study examined <strong>the bioavailability of magnesium<\/strong> in <strong>Sucrosomial\u00ae magnesium.<\/strong> It is a product whose component is magnesium oxide protected by a liposome-like structure. The study consisted of two methods, one examining the absorption of magnesium in the intestinal mucosa isolated from rats. However, we were more interested in the results of the second method, which was implemented on people. Participants were given <strong>350 mg of magnesium in 4 forms<\/strong> \u2013 Sucrosomial\u00ae magnesium, magnesium citrate, magnesium oxide or magnesium bisglycinate. <strong>Magnesium levels in blood, red blood cells and urine<\/strong> were measured. According to the study, the Sucrosomial\u00ae magnesium form resulted in higher <strong>bioavailability<\/strong> than the other forms. In conclusion, further research is needed for higher clinical efficacy. Even so, this means that not only vitamins but also the mineral <a href=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/liposomal-magnesium-gymbeam.html\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">magnesium<\/a> in liposomal form is a more effective option than conventional tablets. <\/span><span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[14] [15]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Magnesium is an important mineral and its range of action may be wider than you realize. Vitamin C can be taken <strong>orally<\/strong> as well as <strong>intravenously<\/strong>, but in both cases there is a problem. <a href=\"https:\/\/gymbeam.com\/vitamin-c-1000-mg-gym-beam.html\" class=\"ek-link\">Vitamin C<\/a> administered intravenously has been shown to <strong>reduce oxidative stress.<\/strong> In addition, however, according to a 2016 study, it can also <strong>improve physiological functions<\/strong> in adults. Where\u2019s the problem? <strong>The oral form<\/strong> of the vitamin is <strong>less effective<\/strong> than the intravenous one, which may be due, for example, to its <strong>lower bioavailability.<\/strong> Intravenous administration is effective but also invasive, and I don\u2019t know about you, but I\u2019m not a big fan of needles. A possible alternative might be <strong>vitamin C in liposomal form,<\/strong> the effectiveness of which was investigated in the study.<\/span> <span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[11]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">The study involved&nbsp;<strong>11 participants,<\/strong>&nbsp;who were divided into&nbsp;<strong>4 groups \u2013 1. placebo, 2. oral unencapsulated form, 3. oral form encapsulated in liposomes and 4. intravenous form.<\/strong>&nbsp;The study results in&nbsp;<strong>better bioavailability of vitamin C in liposomal form<\/strong>&nbsp;than in conventional unencapsulated form. According to the results, the concentration of vitamin C in the bloodstream was&nbsp;<strong>higher in the encapsulated form in liposomes<\/strong>&nbsp;than in the non-encapsulated form, but lower than in the case of intravenous administration. It is therefore clear that the absorption of vitamin C is indeed better in liposomal form.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[11]<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">According to a 2016 study,&nbsp;<strong>the liposomal form of vitamin C<\/strong>&nbsp;could be of interest&nbsp;<strong>to athletes.<\/strong>&nbsp;They have&nbsp;<strong>a higher tendency<\/strong>&nbsp;to suffer from&nbsp;<strong>upper respiratory tract infections<\/strong>&nbsp;caused by&nbsp;<strong>training stress.<\/strong>&nbsp;Vitamin C is effective in&nbsp;<strong>reducing the symptoms,<\/strong>&nbsp;but also the&nbsp;<strong>occurrence of colds not only in athletes,<\/strong>&nbsp;but in general in&nbsp;<strong>people with physical stress.<\/strong>&nbsp;The liposomal form may therefore&nbsp;<strong>address the limitations<\/strong>&nbsp;associated with&nbsp;<strong>nutrient absorption<\/strong>&nbsp;and bioavailability. The results indicate that there are only a few studies that map the absorption and health effects of liposomal products, and<strong>&nbsp;no sports-oriented research.<\/strong>&nbsp;It would definitely be interesting to compare the effectiveness of vitamin C in various forms in athletes with endurance or strength training. It is therefore fair to point out the possible disadvantages that may be associated with the use of liposomal products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Phospholipids in liposomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">If you remember, in one of the previous chapters we state that the phospholipids used to&nbsp;<strong>encapsulate the active ingredient<\/strong>&nbsp;can be from&nbsp;<strong>different sources.<\/strong>&nbsp;<strong>Lipids are<\/strong>&nbsp;essentially&nbsp;<strong>fats<\/strong>, and not all fats are beneficial to the body.&nbsp;<strong>Phospholipids<\/strong>&nbsp;consist of&nbsp;<strong>fatty acids and phosphates,<\/strong>&nbsp;and these can be&nbsp;<strong>unsaturated<\/strong>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<strong>saturated<\/strong>, which are not desired fats. In this case, it depends on the product, for example, there are liposomal forms with&nbsp;<strong>sunflower phospholipids,<\/strong>&nbsp;which are healthy because they contain&nbsp;<strong>unsaturated fatty acids.<\/strong>&nbsp;If you can,&nbsp;<strong>check<\/strong>&nbsp;the&nbsp;<strong>origin<\/strong>&nbsp;of the phospholipids in these products.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[16]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Different quality of liposomes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">Liposomes are&nbsp;<strong>spherical vesicles,<\/strong>&nbsp;as well as&nbsp;<strong>emulsions<\/strong>, because the emulsion is&nbsp;<strong>a combination of oil and water.<\/strong>&nbsp;However, the opposite is not true, and therefore not all emulsions are also liposomes. It is therefore not enough to combine vitamin C powder, lecithin and distilled water at home, use ultrasound, and you will get a liposomal form of vitamin C. Nutritional supplements containing vitamin and phospholipids may be an emulsion, but&nbsp;<strong>may not be liposomal supplements.<\/strong>&nbsp;In addition,&nbsp;<strong>the size of the liposome<\/strong>&nbsp;is important, as smaller liposomes have shown significantly higher absorption. One study even states that by reducing the size of liposomes from&nbsp;<strong>236 nm to 97 nm,<\/strong>&nbsp;cell uptake increased up to&nbsp;<strong>9-times&nbsp;<\/strong>and even&nbsp;<strong>34-times<\/strong>&nbsp;when reduced to&nbsp;<strong>64 nm.<\/strong>&nbsp;In the case of liposomes, therefore, we can say that size matters.<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[17]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">More and more new products with different production processes are constantly appearing on the market. Even in the case of liposomal products, it is important to <strong>look at quality<\/strong> and differentiate. It is a substance found in food, such as sunflowers, eggs or soy.<\/span> <span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[18] [19]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"tlid-translation translation\" lang=\"en\">If you are not a supporter of&nbsp;<strong>GMOs<\/strong>&nbsp;or have&nbsp;<strong>a certain intolerance,<\/strong>&nbsp;pay attention to&nbsp;<strong>the source of vitamin C<\/strong>&nbsp;and focus on vitamin C&nbsp;<strong>without GMOs, gluten, soy and dairy products.<\/strong><\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"tadv-color\" style=\"color: #ff6600;\">[18]<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim of the article is to present the liposomal form of drugs, to point out the advantages and disadvantages, and to provide research results.&nbsp;<strong>There are not many studies focused on nutritional supplements,<\/strong>&nbsp;and from the available sources we can say that liposomal supplements have the&nbsp;<strong>advantage<\/strong>&nbsp;of&nbsp;<strong>better bioavailability.<\/strong>&nbsp;It is therefore possible that by taking this form you will take in more nutrients than in the classic form of tablets or capsules. However, this does not mean that all common supplements belong to retirement. Liposomal products also have their disadvantages, and therefore conventional tablets will remain popular. However, it will be interesting to follow future research in this area, which may come up with more products.
